Sustainable Suburban Gardening, Square Foot Gardening

Follow us in our adventure; suburban, sustainable gardening using "Square Foot Gardening".  We have converted our small lot in Southern California for the all-year production of edibles.

If we can do it so can you!

Welcome to the Mapletree Gardens website and the story of our sustainable gardening experiment.

This is the story of our experiment in urban sustainable gardening. During World War II it was known as a Victory Garden. We decided to convert our garden, both front and back to growing edibles 12 months of the year, which we are lucky to be able to do in this part of southern California.

This website, and our blog, is the story of how we are doing it. It will include the good, the bad, and the ugly.

We hope that we can encourage anyone who might be interested in growing produce for their family, for friends, or for the needy, to give it a try.

Even on our small lot we grow more food than we can consume. What we don’t can or freeze we give to friends and relatives. 2011 and 2012 were bad years for the garden. Family illness took too much time away from the garden in late summer 2011 and it went to seed.

We are making a big effort, even with our limited time, to get it back in shape and to continue our completion plans.

We welcome your comments. Please enjoy this site.
